As we are moving to a new space, I led the office redesign by collaborating with Thailand based architects 'Supermachine Studio'. As a wannabe architect it was a very exciting project for me. It's a smaller space, and a conservative budget, but we have a good plan to inject some fun, energy, and youthfulness into our workplace. Actual photos to be posted upon completion.

We recently beat out two other agencies for the coveted beer brand's relaunch into the Thai market. “Carlsberg is one of the world's great beer brands and a former Lovemark of many Thai consumers. Many people have been waiting for this day,” said Joel Clement, a bangkok-based regional creative director for Saatchi & Saatchi who led the creative portion of the pitch. “Although distribution will roll out gradually, this is a very significant win for the office. As Carlsberg find their way back into the Thai market, they are a perfect partner for the agency which is undergoing a bit of a reincarnation itself.”

busy season of tribes

andy and i are just winding down a busy season of tribes (on location idea generating workshops). pics here are taken on the roof of saatchi vietnam where we just completed 3 days on carlsberg which netted a nice big regional idea with local applications. shortly after, we did a tribe for kraft/tiger biskuat in singapore for the indonesian, philippines and malaysian markets. a week later we worked on a mead johnson tribe in singapore- this generated 3 big ideas for a regional campaign. next week we're in malaysia for an ariel tribe. these are a great tool for cracking tough briefs and usually yield a lot of big integrated ideas.

summer academy in architecture- university of texas@austin

i took a sabbatical during 2010 to attend the summer academy in architecture at the university of texas in austin. it was amazing. it's the top ranked public university for undergrad studies in architecture and i found out why. the program is a very intensive 5 week foray into the subject. we learned an immense amount in just a month and a half. it was a lot of work and i probably slept an average of 5 hours each night for the entire duration. but it was well worth it and one of the best adventures i have ever embarked on. i had started a blog at http://summerarchstudyaustin.blogspot.com/ but i was just to busy to update it.

It was such a violent fire that several big noisy red trucks from the Peterborough Fire Department had to respond to the call. Joel and his friend had been playing with matches. He was only six years old but had managed to burn down a huge swath of pine forest behind his childhood home in New Hampshire. Later that year, the elementary school where Joel was a skinny little first grader held a poster contest for the annual Fire Prevention Week. As you can deduct, he had a wonderful life experience to draw upon and that insight led him to a concept based loosely on ‘Keep matches away from children.’ The coveted first place prize, a shiny trophy of a fireman poised with hose, sits on Joel’s desk today. Out of all the countless gold, silver, and bronze Cannes Lions, Clios, and One Show Pencils he has won, it is the only advertising award he has ever kept. Neither Alex Bogusky, Jeff Goodby, nor Dan Weiden have one of those.

the book of conversations is a collection of questions, each one a conversation starter. 120 artists, creative directors, photographers, illustrators and animators were approached and given a single question. our task was to provoke the question with an image of our own interpretation. the image could make the reader cry, shout, laugh or think. but most importantly, it should get them to talk. the authors and good friends of mine, jason schragger and mark carolan admitted that i drew probably the toughest question out of the hat to answer but i loved the challenge. in the end i went with the image above. how often do you get to crucify someone? part of the proceeds will go to charity. www.bookofconversations.com

the school of visual arts presented 'the wilde years: four decades of shaping visual culture,' an exhibition that celebrates creative professionals who have graduated from the advertising and design department of sva. organised in recognition of department chair richard wilde's 40th anniversary at the college, the show featured iconic and culturally significant works by select alumni from all four decades of wilde's tenure. says richard wilde: 'i am inspired by these alumni and their accomplishments. many have become some of the most influential and creative people working in the business today.' thanks richard!

hp- digital crime fighting

the dream project. good client, huge budget, great team of support. we created a campaign of tvc's to show how major companies and institutions partnered with hp to solve their problems. this one explained how international police forces use hp computers to track and catch criminals. director fredrik bond was amazing and added depth to the idea. we aborted the initial plan of shooting in prague to shoot a set built in a studio so we could control the lighting while getting the rigging shots right. casting in paris, shot in london, post in l.a. probably close to $2 million all said and done. won a lion at cannes and most every international award. did i mention this was the dream project?

sony ericsson- mobile gaming phone

andrew petch asked me to work with him on this project. the client wanted to show off their mobile gaming phone by example of one of it's many included games. credit to thai director suthon petchsuwan for taking it to another level. the shoot was long but a blast. i've never laughed so much in my life as i did during those three days.

amnesty international- stamps

this was one of the first projects i worked on at saatchi back in 2005. it was for amnesty international's letter writing program in which ordinary people were asked to write letters to dictators and leaders around the world asking for change. the topics had personal interest to us. it was fun but intensive, and it went on to win gold at cannes.

(what should be appearing here is a tvc campaign we did for hp digital cameras. waiting for the spots to be sent to me by writer matt elhardt but he is at sea at the moment... very cool stuff. we used famed pop art photographer martin parr to shoot stills that we played together to represent a time lapse of someone documenting their life.) check back here soon and they'll probably be up.

inlingua language schools

inlingua wanted to dispel the myth that learning a foreign language was a daunting task requiring years of study. chung and i offered this solution for inlingua's rapid language program. the future star photographer jason ness (jasonness.com) and an amazing retoucher named stit in bangkok brought their talents to these ads. just picked up silver at adfest.

wonderbra- 3 dimensional women

for wonderbra we created this series shot by the great photographer allan myles and his producer extraordinaire kate downie. we avoided all the big boob jokes (they always seem aimed at men rather than the real consumer-women) and instead used the 3D red and blue lines to suggest that wearing a wonderbra would give you more dimension and help you to stand out in a crowd. it helped us stand out with a silver lion at cannes, a gold clio, and 3 silver clios among a slew of other gold international awards. came in 10th most awarded campaign in the world by gunn report.

hp + ftd florists

here's another in the hp+ campaign. from the case studies came the story of how ftd florists used hp computers to send flowers from one end of the world to the other, digitally. powerfully shot by andrew douglas. the best cg artists did some pretty amazing things here. turn up the volume and watch.

cu chi tunnels museum

cu chi vietnam. fighting off the americans is not that difficult if you construct 200 km of tunnels underground as your military base. the typography plays off vietnamese script which is romanised with all sorts of accent marks. we simply (actually painstakingly) added them to our handcrafted type that was inspired by the prevalence of hand painted signage everywhere in the country. it was worth the labor as it picked up a lion at cannes and a gold at adfest.

ags four winds moving company

we wrote these in our thai office and shot them in malaysia with director brad hogarth. he brought great thinking to the table, and chose to shoot these as organically as possible- the background wall was actually built on rollers. shout-outs to amazing producer jamie popham and to chris for getting in the tub.

espn- all day, everyday

a campaign we did for the 24 hour sports channel, espn. shot by allan myles in perth. we pulled this off by having outfits for the models made out of the same fabric as the couches. we then draped bits of cloth over seams where body touched couch. then a good bit of retouching. picked up a lion last year.

walking through a park in kuala lumpur i saw this. it looked like a painting. i framed it for symmetry and snapped. i have a few other shots of shopping carts i've found in odd places around the world, but this is my favourite.

aksara book stores

one good book leads to another. we did these in indonesia for one of the better book store chains- aksara. much research went into finding titles, and constructing the lines was quite amusing. they cleaned up at the local awards show and helped earn them agency of the year.

amnesty international- stamps second phase

this was a second campaign for amnesty international's letter writing campaign to urge evil leaders to change their ways. making the headlines out of real stamps by hand took our team more effort than you could imagine. yet to be tested by most of the award shows, but was awarded a silver at adfest recently.

sylvania long life bulbs

this spot, the first tvc i created in thailand, proves you can win a lion even with only a $5000 budget. done at results ogilvy/mather in 2001. thai director thor at phenomena shot it for us and did a great job capturing the simplicity of the idea. it won the only lion for tv of any agency in asia that year.

earlier work- hp printers

with no printer problems to discuss, i.s. manager and coworker experience an awkward moment of silence.

having remedied the printer dilemma, the i.s. manager becomes affectionately known as 'the problem solver.'

upon entering his cube, the i.s. manager receives some rather positive feedback concerning the new printers.

with the new printers installed, the i.s. manager has a hard time adjusting to a lack of printer complaints.

due to a lack of printer problems, the i.s. manager has time to focus on other, more important matters.

this is a print campaign i did at goodby silverstein back in 1997. it won me and my team US $100,000 and a cannes lion among other awards. i preferred the cash. after taxes and sharing with all involved, and throwing a $3,000 party, i pocketed about $22,000. no complaints. tho i wish they still had the athena newspaper advertising cash awards. shot by world renowned photojournalist eugene richards, it shows how easy life is for i.s. managers who use hp printers.

this is a campaign we did back at goodby silverstein when nike wanted to celebrate their heritage by opening a symbolically important new store where nike was begun- in eugene oregon. while digging for facts about the history of nike we realized that no one had yet told the story of how the company was started. this was one of three campaigns i did for this client that helped win me the marget larsen award (art director of the year), a big honor in san francisco, an award rich silverstein cursed me out for winning in one year which took him ten years to earn.

navy recruitment- hierarchy chart

we made this in singapore for the navy's recruitment drive. the mailer arrives with the recipient's name personalized on the address label. when unfolded, he finds himself at the top of the hierarchy chart. we went as big as the printing companies in singapore could print.

earlier work- nike stores

these ads are from a series of about a dozen executions which helped launch the flagship niketown stores in major usa cities. we found 'famous' local athletes in each city and had them rate local sports venues with an original rating system.

this was one of my very first assignments at goodby silverstein in 1997. it was an assignment nobody wanted because the brief was to simply announce the opening of new factory outlet stores with the mandatory that 'we drive traffic to the store.' that was enough for me and the campaign went on to win a load of awards.

national cancer institute

the ambient

pinyo and i did this in our bangkok office for the national cancer institute of thailand. the poster is simple. the ambient is fun. we had double-headed cigarettes made up and placed in ashtrays in pubs and restaurants. the message 'you never smoke alone' was printed on the cigarette. i hate second-hand smoke unless it's coming from something cuban or nicaraguan.
